How To Trust Your Intuition

When you first start working with your clairsenses, or your intuition, you might question the validity of the information you receive. "That can't possibly be right," you think as you get a flash of information or a vision that seems disconnected from this space and time, like deja vu. Or, for some reason -- out of 10 million possible songs -- the exact right song with the exact right message comes on, almost stopping you in your tracks because it's just so on point.
Somehow you know these flashes are your intuition or messages from spirit, yet you might not fully believe in or trust in your psychic abilities or clair senses yet.
This paradox is frustrating if you want to lean deeper into your intuitive skills. On the one hand, you might be totally gung-ho about working with your intuition and getting clear messages from your Spirit Guides. On the other hand, you might be a little afraid or unsure, or even subconsciously completely terrified of working with your intuition.
You might be blocking your intuition
Our society has -- until recently -- actually demonized working with your intuition. "Witches" were burned at the stake; clairvoyants minimized to fraudsters and charlatans, their reputations destroyed; anyone showing psychic ability told they were working with demons or the Devil, himself.
People were ostracised, terrorised, tortured -- for doing something everyone is naturally capable of doing. (Or just for being smart, capable, outspoken women, but that's a topic for a different blog post.)
If you know a little bit about epigenetics and how fear can travel from one generation to the next, you can understand why even the thought of doing such absolutely normal things like getting messages from your intuition or Spirit Guides might fill your heart with terror and dread.
Even if you are consciously totally excited about working with your spirit guides, you might avoid it because your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and all of your aunts (uncles, fathers, brothers, grand-dads, cousins) had to avoid even talking about such things out of fear of being judged as a weirdo or, even worse, fearing a violent death.
If you are afraid of working with your intuition on any level, you likely won't be able to strongly connect with it. You'll push messages away, thinking they come from a negative, evil space. You'll learn to ignore your intuition, to shut it down.
That's why it's important to work on any sort of underlying negative beliefs you might have about working with your intuition.
Instead of thinking:
It's evil to work with my intuition and my Spirit Guides.
Think:
It's perfectly normal for me to work with my intuition and even my Spirit Guides and Guardian Angels.
Instead of thinking:
I'll channel messages from dark, demonic, or negative entities.
Think:
I am surrounded by benevolent, supportive, kind, positive, and generous Entities and Energies. I will channel messages from them.
Instead of thinking:
I'm not intuitive; I don't have a gift.
Think:
Intuition is a part of every almost everyone's natural talents and tendencies.
💡 One pilot study indicated that non-psychic people had a genetic mutation, not psychics. Could that mutation be an evolutionary response to environmental and societal pressures? Of course, more studies need to be done to understand this phenomenon better.
Instead of thinking:
In order to be a fabulous psychic/medium/channel/intuitive, you need to have an unbroken psychic lineage.
Think:
It's highly likely that I come from a long line of people who had some sort of psychic and/or intuitive abilities, but my ancestors might not have understood their experiences and/or they might not have been able to openly discuss their intuitive or psychic experiences with anyone.
Instead of thinking:
If I open up my intuition, I won't be able to control who or what comes through.
Think:
I can control the spirits I communicate with (for the most part) and organize times where it is OK to talk with me and times when it is NOT. Spirits must respect my boundaries (and I need to respect my boundaries as well.) <-- this is especially important for mediums.
Considering how the media and Hollywood have portrayed people who are exceptionally talented mediums, healers, or psychics, the fears mentioned above are valid. Horror movies have completely over-dramatized how psychic senses work and what working with your intuition attracts. Movies like The Sixth Sense dramatize experiences to make a point. A lot of the Mediums I've talked to say they had similar experiences to the child in that movie, but they learned to control the flow.
Is working with your intuition dangerous?
Is there a danger of working with or calling on something, erm... unholy... when you start working with your intuition? Yes and no. On one hand, your intuition can come from your own spirit and higher self. On the other hand, many of us pick up messages from other sources.
And that's why I recommend that you do a few things to minimize any scary or negative experiences.
If you are starting to work with your intuition and psychic gifts, make sure that you:
Protect your energy and space.
Clear the space you will be working with regularly with sage or Paolo Santo -- and make sure you are getting your incense/herbs from a trusted source.
Center in a spirit of curiosity, openness, and gratitude.
Call on only benevolent and helpful sources of information and details.
Trust your gut.
Don't set out to do harm with your intuitive knowledge.
And never, ever call on something negative that you can't banish.
While I think that learning to work with and trust your intuition is such a magical and essential pursuit, I also think that you need to be mindful of how you use your gifts. When you use them for helpful, beneficial and enriching outcomes, it's one thing. When you use them to control, manipulate, or destroy others, that's something else.
The intentions you set for your work have a powerful effect on how messages come through and the quality of those messages. At least in my opinion they do.
Of course, other people have other opinions about the topic. Figure out your own. That's part of the trust thing. Let your intuition guide you and teach you how to use it.
How to trust your intuition
The most important thing you need to do when you are learning to trust your intuition is to trust your intuition. Seriously.
If you're doing a reading for someone and you feel it's necessary to blurt something nonsensical out, blurt that something out.
Trust that you can receive messages from your intuition, your Higher Self, and your Spirit Guides.
Have faith in the messages you receive.
The messages you get from your intuition might not always make sense at first -- especially when you're doing work for others -- the meaning of what you receive sometimes comes later on down the line.
Things might need to shift, time might need to pass before you "get" something you were given. You'll get it when the time comes -- it usually hits like an A-HA moment!
Honor the messages you get
It's important, too, to honor the way messages come through to you. If you expect full-on holographic, realistic looking visions, but you get your messages clairaudiently (music or conversations) or claircognizantly (you just know), you might not think you're getting anything and get really frustrated with the process.
Or, if your "visions" come to you through deja vu experience, dreams, or a mind movie and you expect something else, you might miss an intuitive message.
So sort out what your most powerful clair-sense is, but don't limit yourself to just one clair-sense! Once you start working with your intuition more frequently, you might get messages from a variety of different sensory areas.
And remember, when you just start working with your intuition, it might quietly show up. You might already recognize the messages, but you might have been ignoring them because you weren't so comfortable about working with your intuition or you didn't trust it.
Intuition can be like a muscle: The more you work with it, the more it grows.
Every person's intuitive experience is unique to them
Also, remember that one person's experience with their intuition or clairsenses might not be the same as yours. That's OK. Each of us receives our messages in our very own unique way.
Get comfy/familiar with the way your intuition comes through.
Why not start working with your intuition today?
Ultimately, working with your intuition can be easy. It's a natural skill almost every human has.
The more you work with and trust your intuition, the stronger it will get and the more you will trust it.
